The word Reiki The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy”. So Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.” But what does it mean to you and how can you learn and experience this beautiful energy?

The first time I decided to learn Reiki, I was guided through a series of synchronistic events that led me to my Reiki teacher. When you get the calling to study Reiki, you will naturally be guided to your teacher who will transmit the Reiki energy to you, through an Attunement ritual. The Attunement ritual will feel like a warm feeling washing over you with a slight opening of your crown Chakra.

5 Years later and I am a Reiki Master myself, attuning other people. However I still have people ask questions about the Reiki Energy, how can they experience it and what does it feel like? I always use the example about about Christopher Columbus and the Invisible ships.

The movie: “What the Bleep do we know”, makes a point about our belief system and the way our brain functions. In 1492, Columbus landed on the island of Hispaniola, now the countries of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Until Columbus’ arrival, the islanders had only seen and heard of small boats-like their own canoes. Because if this, the natives couldn’t see the big ships of Christopher Columbus even though they were in plain sight The shaman was able to detect the waves that the ships were making and came to the conclusion that something was causing them and that is how he was able to see the ships.

The question remains: Are we only able to see what we know? Is our brain preprogrammed in such a way as to reveal only those things we believe exist? As a practitioner working with healing energy and reiki I often ask myself those questions. Specifically, I realize that I feel the results, I know it is working but I am not able to see the physical manifestation of the energy. And so, if you cannot touch it and see it does it mean it does not exist?

Couple of days ago, a good friend of mine who is a scientist and a does cancer research complained from a headache. I knew she does not believe in Reiki, but i also knew I could help her. So I convinced her to come for a treatment. I let the energy flow and put my hands on her temples. Her head was burning hot. I was not sure if she is feeling the energy the same way I was, or whether it was having an effect on her. However, like so many cases in my practice I decided to let it go and trust the process.

When I finished, my friend got up from the Reiki table with a smile on her face and told me that her headache was gone. I felt triumph. And this is the same triumph I feel every time I see the smile on my patients and they tell me I have helped them. It is not a big deal, many people will say. Everyone knows Reiki helps with headache. However, at this moment in time I felt validated. My trust, my intuition was backed up by scientific evidence. I could not see the energy, I did not know if it was working, but the headache was gone. That was a fact. I had proof. Science and spirituality were on the same page.

And then I realized, i did not need to see it to know it exists. That was the lesson from this experience. Sometimes, we need to quiet the mind and trust the heart. If we really listen it always tells us the truth. And leads us to the right path. I could not see the energy, I did not know if it was working, but the headache was gone. That was a fact. I had proof. Science and spirituality were on the same page. And then I realized, i did not need to see it to know it exists. That was the lesson from this experience. Sometimes, we need to quiet the mind and trust the heart. If we really listen it always tells us the truth. And leads us to the right path.
